Mayor, Sheriff and others "locked up" for a good cause

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

If you saw the mayor of Jackson and the Hinds County Sheriff in handcuffs and behind bars Wednesday, there was no need to panic.

They joined other high profile community and business leaders for the Muscular Dystrophy Association's annual "Lock-up" fundraiser event. Each year, MDA recruits business and community leaders to agree to be "locked up" while they raise money for their "bail".

"No time is ever good to go to jail unless you're going to jail on behalf of MDA," said Jackson Mayor Tony Yarber.

"This does not feel good, but it's for a good cause and when you sit back and you look at where it's going it makes you feel good," said Sheriff Victor Mason. "So I don't mind being here today, but just today though. They need to come get me outta here!"

Organizers had hoped to raise $58,000 Wednesday for next year's MDA summer camp, but they fell a bit short.
