JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A deadly accident on I-55 Thursday morning is bringing to light the problem of people crossing the Interstate on foot. Jackson police say over the years they've seen numerous deadly accidents involving pedestrians trying to navigate interstate traffic.

"I think the flow of traffic on Interstate 55 is just too heavy to try to cross it walking or running across," said Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance. "The cars are going too fast, your feet are probably moving too slow, and your probability as we've seen of being hit by a car is very high."

Nevertheless, pedestrians cross and walk along I-55 daily, putting themselves and motorists at risk.

"This is not the first such fatality out on I-55 that we've had so obviously there are better ways to try to go from one side of the interstate to the other," added Vance. "You can walk down the street till you got a cross street and just walk."

Vance says motorists trying to avoid pedestrians can swerve into occupied traffic lanes, and cause a chain reaction accident. His best advice; only get on the interstate, if you're behind the wheel.

"The whole practice is absolutely unwise and can be tragic and deadly as we just saw an example of this morning," said Vance.
