FLOWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Three Cuban Nationals have been arrested in connection with cloned credit cards. Yeoslan Mendoza Maure, 29  Erick Reyes Cortes, 33 and Pedro Ramos Cainet 23 were attempting to use the cards at a convenience store before being caught late Wednesday.

Officers recovered 50 cloned cards, each containing compromised credit or debit card information on the magnetic strip of the cards, which leads to fifty potential victims.

Card fraud is a growing problem in the country. The crooks are difficult to catch, but in this case police had an alert attendant and professionally trained Officers responding that not only caught them before they left, but found the cards.

To make a clone card, all the thief needs is the victim’s credit or debit card number and duplicates the information onto a card. It is unknown at this time where the men received the card numbers; however it’s usually obtained from skimming devices or purchased online.

Essentially what happens is they or an affiliate are skilled enough to hack into systems and cause data breaches and they will sell the information on line for a bundle price.

Some things you can do to protect yourself is to monitor your account closely. If you see any fraudulent transaction, or transactions you’re not sure of, even if it's one of those you're trying to think if you made it, call your bank and find out and make sure, because the sooner you stop it on your card the less that they have an opportunity to spend.

The three in custody are from Cuba here temporarily in the United States legally. Each is being held without bond and charged with Possession of Counterfeit Bank Notes and Conspiracy to Commit a Felony. If convicted each face imprisonment up to 30 years and fines up to $500,000.00.

This is an ongoing case and Detectives are working with area agencies to determine how far the crime reaches.
