JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

There are three robots the Jackson Police Department bomb squad has in their arsenal to deal with explosives and other situations.

Members of the bomb squad have several tools that can sniff out explosives, along with tools with which they can handle and detonate bombs from a safe distance.

The bomb squad responds to about 8-10 explosive device calls a year. They're also often called out to situations where things like old grenades and other dangerous items are found in and around residences.

All members on the squad have gone through the FBI bomb training - a six week course with instruction on how to safely handle explosives.

Once a device is located, members of the squad formulate how they plan to approach it.

Every situation can be different.

"We'll sit down, put our minds together, we'll figure out whats the best line of approach," said bomb squad member L.D. Taylor. "It, of course, is going to be some type of container which is a package or something, we're going to x-ray, see what the best way to attack it is, then were going to go down and breach that container. What's found in that container determines what we do after that."

There are four bomb squads in the state of Mississippi - Jackson, Clinton, Tupelo and Biloxi.

Jackson's is the largest with seven members.
