Mississippi casino revenue down

JACKSON, Miss (AP) -

Mississippi casino revenue fell in August, as continued strength on the Gulf Coast couldn't overcome continuing losses at Mississippi River gambling halls.

Figures released by the state Revenue Department show casinos won $171 million from gamblers in August, down 1 percent from $172.7 million in August 2015.

Statewide gambling revenue is up less than 1 percent over the past year.

Revenue at the 16 Mississippi River casinos fell 3.6 percent from August 2015, dipping to $73 million. Receipts at that region's casinos have fallen in 43 of the last 50 months.

Gamblers lost $98 million at the 12 coastal casinos, up 1 percent from last August. It's the 22nd increase for coastal casinos in the last 27 months.

Numbers exclude Choctaw Indian casinos, which don't report winnings to the state.
