JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson State University student Benjamin Sabine was found dead of an apparent drug overdose in his room in the Campbell North Residence Hall earlier this week.

On Thursday night, hundreds of his classmates, friends and family gathered at Reddix Hall to remember Sabine in a candlelight vigil.

The event was organized by students; attended by JSU President Carolyn Meyers, and much appreciated by an emotional Sammy Sabine, Benjamin's father.

"I was praying Ben's death wouldn't be in vain and I'm convinced that this is going to be a start for healing for us and also for the nation," said Sabine. "We're overwhelmed. We felt the power of God tonight."

"Benjamin was a part of our Tiger family and anytime we lose a member of this family, we're here for them a hundred percent," said Kendall Bunch.

Balloons were also released in Sabine's honor. His suitemate became suspicious when he didn't see Sabine all day Monday after returning from out of town.

It's believed his body had been there several days.
