Outdoorama lures kids off the couch and social media

MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

This first weekend in fall was a great time to be outdoors, and kids from across the state headed to the reservoir for a day of fun.

They were celebrating the great outdoors as a part of national hunting and fishing day.

"We just came out here just hoping to have some fun," said Dalton Ivey a youngster who spent the day fishing.

Ivey is one of hundreds of children grabbing a fishing pole and taking in nature.

"Outdoorama on the Rez" helps get kids off the couch and social media and into the wild.

"We got to go shoot bows a minute ago, and we were just fishing. I didn't catch anything. He caught like three fish," added Ivey pointing to a young friend.

It was a day of fishing, canoeing, shooting and learning about protecting the environment.

The event is hosted by the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks and the Mississippi Wildlife Federation.

It is held at the Turcotte Education and Shooting Facility.

Kevin Thomas brought his son for a second year.

"A lot of people I think don't get to experience it in other places, and it's just a good educational thing for him to do. It's a lot of fun to do it, and it's free," said Thomas.

"This involves them to come outside and experience things they may not experience on a daily basis or really ever at all," said Amanda Jones with the Mississippi Wildlife Federation. "So really just help promote hunting and fishing and outdoor activities and to get the kids outside to be active".

Outdoorama is held each year on the last Saturday in September.
