GLUCKSTADT, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Three decades of German ancestry and culture were celebrated Sunday in Gluckstadt as thousands turned out for GermanFest 2016.

Many returned to honor their roots in the small Madison county community, coming together to enjoy all things German. The free festival is always held on the grounds of St Joseph Catholic Church.

There was authentic food favorites like bratwurst, sauerkraut and shish kabobs as well as German folk singing, dancing and more.

"You'll see many people come out here in costume, in the German costume. You'll see them drinking beverages out of their German steins," said GermanFest Chairman Whitt Whitten. "But most people come for the authentic German food, the sauerkraut that we sell over in the country store and also just to sit around with families and enjoy the German music by the band that comes every year".

GermanFest's 30th anniversary also celebrates the Gluckstadt community which was founded in the early 1900's.
