Man shot to death in North Mississippi was victim in earlier assault

LOWNDES COUNTY, MISS (AP) -

A man recently shot to death in north Mississippi was the alleged victim in a separate assault case.

The Commercial Dispatch reports 23-year-old Charles Moody Jr. died Sept. 19 from multiple gunshot wounds.

The newspaper obtained copies of an indictment showing Moody as the alleged victim of a November 2013 attack. A Lowndes County grand jury indicted Johnny Bonner, also known as "Johnny Kuckles," in the assault case.

Court documents said Bonner allegedly slammed Moody to the ground and broke his neck. Bonner was charged with aggravated assault. The trial has been postponed multiple times.

Authorities say Bonner was in the Lowndes County jail when Moody was killed.

However, Moody's father, Charles Moody Sr., tells The Dispatch he believes his son's death is connected to the assault case.
