UTICA, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Department of Transportation has increased Office of Enforcement presence on Highway 18 after decayed timber piles were discovered on Bridge No. 19.4 two miles east of the Claiborne County Line during a routine maintenance safety inspection.

District workers began a project to replace the damaged piling today. During the repair work, the westbound lane of Highway 18 will be passable to traffic under the posted weight limit while the eastbound lane will be closed.

Flagmen will be present during the repairs, and motorists should expect delays.

Once the repairs are complete, the bridge will remain posted at its current weight limit of 10 tons tandem axle.

“These repairs will not increase the weight limit but will maintain it at 10 tons tandem axle to keep the bridge open until replacement structures are built,” said MDOT Executive Director Melinda McGrath. “If commercial vehicles over the posted weight limit continue to travel across the bridge, it will deteriorate, and a lower rating will be mandated resulting in the closure of this corridor from Jackson to Port Gibson.”

The current load restriction has been in place since 2010.

Plans are being developed to replace this bridge along with three other bridges in this area on Highway 18. MDOT estimates this bridge replacement project to be let to contract in spring 2017.
