JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

This week the Jackson Police Department was announced as a new partner in the Violence Reduction Network(VRN). The program led by the Justice Department assists municipal police departments with access to federal resources to fight violent crime.

"There's going to be grant funding that may be available to us," said Chief Lee Vance, fresh from the VRN National Summit. "I can't even explain the possibilities you can do with grant fund so the possibilities are great."

JPD will now have access to a wealth of federal crime fighting resources, customized training and technical assistance through the VRN.

"The beneficiaries and working together with the federal government, hopefully we'll see the type of reduction in our violent crime that's going to make Jackson a more safer place to live," added Vance.

Cities selected to the program have violent crime numbers higher than the national average. Former St. Louis Missouri Police Chief Daniel Isom will serve as a liaison, guiding JPD as they integrate this new program.
