HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Mississippi Department of Transportation has announced that a major traffic shift is coming to the Interstate 55 South Project between McDowell Road and Byram in Hinds County.

To prepare for the upcoming traffic shift, MDOT crews will close the inside lane of I-55 northbound between Wynndale Road and Savannah Street from 8 p.m. September 30 until 2 a.m. October 1.

“The safety of the traveling public is our number one priority,” said Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall. “We want motorists to be aware of what’s about to happen so they can travel safely through the work zone.”

The traffic shift will involve alternating lane closures of I-55 southbound between Savannah Street and Wynndale Road. Interstate 55 southbound will be down to one-lane of travel. While the traffic switch is taking place the entrance and exit ramps at Elton Road and Siwell Road will be closed.

Once the traffic shift has been completed, southbound traffic will be on a head-to-head configuration with northbound I-55 traffic. The head-to-head traffic configuration will be in place until the project is complete.

“The traffic switch could occur within the next week. However, there are several factors that will determine exactly when the shift to the new configuration will take place,” said MDOT District Five Engineer Brian Ratliff. “To ensure that everyone stays safe, we want to give the traveling public advanced notice of the upcoming traffic changes.”
