JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

What started as a normal day for a 13-year-old girl ended in horror.

Police say the child was walking to Peeples Middle School Friday morning and was kidnapped in the 400 block of Woody Drive.

The girl says a man approached her, asked her age, then grabbed her and dragged her inside a home nearby.

"Allegedly, the suspect tried to get her into the bedroom in the residence," said Commander Tyree Jones with the Jackson Police Department. "She put up a fight, she was able to escape."

People who live nearby say the incident is upsetting, but not necessarily surprising.

Quintaria Taylor has lived in an apartment complex near the site of the kidnapping for three years now.

"I've heard of multiple kidnappings here," she said. "There's been multiple, back to back, it's nonstop. And it's got to get better. It's got to."

The suspect has been identified as 35-year-old Dashund Davis, who's now in jail charged with kidnapping.

"It's a felony charge," said Commander Jones. "A very serious felony charge as well. And it does carry a very stiff prison sentence, as well as a fine."

The investigation is ongoing. There's no word yet on a bond.

"I think it's awful, added Taylor, "and I think that Jackson should get better, because it's not getting better at all."

Police say, luckily, the girl was not injured.
