JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

An outbreak of Hand Foot and Mouth disease in Louisiana has health officials on the lookout for the infection in Mississippi. 3 On Your Side looked at the viral infection that can affect children most commonly in the school or daycare settings.

"We have had a couple of cases in the office, not that many," said Alisha McArthur-Wilkes, Family Nurse Practitioner at Quinn Healthcare. "But we are telling everyone to make sure they wash their hands very well and keep the areas clean."

This message comes reminding you to take preventative measures, so you or your children do not become the next patients battling the highly contagious Hand Foot and Mouth disease.

The first sign of the viral infection is fever.

"And then they will develop some lesions in their mouth that are very painful within the cheeks and on their tongue and on the gums," said McArthur-Wilkes. "They may have a non-itchy red rash on their hands and the soles of their feet."

McArthur-Wilkes said the viral illness will develop slowly and can last several weeks, but you can help prevent your household from catching the common pediatric sickness with a few simple steps.

"Definitely hand hygiene. You want to teach your child to wash their hands very well. Teach them to cough or sneeze in their hands because it is transmitted through the oral secretions. Clean your areas and common areas very well, sanitize it very well," McArthur-Wilkes said. "Also, isolate anybody that's infected with the infection until the fever has stopped and the lesions have healed."

It is also important to avoid salty and spicy foods that will irritate the lesions in the mouth and make the condition worse.
