JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Everyday heroes laced up their sneakers in the fight against diabetes Sunday.

"BE SOMEONE'S HERO" was the theme of Mississippi's 22nd annual Walk For Diabetes.

Hundreds joined the annual event taking to the course at the Southern Farm Bureau in Ridgeland.

Teams came together walking and running to raise money that stays in the state and helps fund programs and services of the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi.

That includes Camp Kandu, the only camp for children with diabetes and their families in Mississippi, "Sweet Subject" school diabetes education, patient assistance for needy Mississippians and much more.

"I ran for my mom and all the people that are out there that have diabetes," said Zachary Griffin, who ran with his mother Diane Griffin. "And just to get some exercise."

"Sometimes you get so wrapped up in a busy week, it's good to just slow down and remember that you know it's nice to raise awareness for those who need your help," said runner Alex Kelly.

There was also music, a picnic and kids activities.
