JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Despite a Monday morning shooting where the victim was struck in the neck and an armed robbery of a gas station, Jackson police say crime in precinct 4 is down.

They've moved precinct 4 to Old Canton Road and Parkway Drive, hoping their more centralized location will aid in their crime fighting efforts.

JPD Commander Tyree Jones said, "Police presence is major for these particular areas."

Residents have already noticed the increased police presence and believe it may stop criminals before they act.

"People are going to do what they want to do anyways but it will lessen the crime and make people feel safer," said resident Jerri Chin. "They want to shop later in the evening time because it's getting darker earlier."

Police say they continue to search for a suspect in the gas station robbery that happened down the street from their new precinct.

"The robbery that occurred last week and the shooting that occurred this morning, we've not been able to connect those to any other crimes," said Commander Jones. "We believe those were isolated incidents."

Police say they will continue to increase relationships with residents through neighborhood watch groups and ties with businesses. They say sharing information is another key to fighting crime.
