HOLMES COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A truck driver is dead after an Amtrak train slammed into his 18-wheeler at a crossing in Holmes County.

According to the Holmes County Sheriff's Department, 24-year-old Omar Savillion was the driver that was killed in the crash on Linden Road off of Highway 49.

“It is bad,” said Captain Sam Chapman with the Holmes County Sheriff's Department.

The Amtrak train was headed to New Orleans and the truck driver was going to pickup a daily load of soy beans when they collided.

“He said he was running about 65-80 miles an hour and the truck just pulled on to the track and just couldn't stop for him,” said Chapman.

There are no crossing arms at the intersection. The train split the truck in half on impact, dragging the cab and driver 3 quarters of a mile.

A mangled metal mess was left behind.

“The motor is in one place, the train is missing in one place, the frame in one place, the cab is in another place, it is pretty bad,” said

Antonious Redmond was among many family, friends and fellow truck drivers who came to the crash site with heavy hearts.

“Yes, it is pretty scary now. It makes you want to look both ways when you come up to the train tracks,” Redmond said.

We are told none of the passengers on the train were hurt and the cause of accidents still under investigation.
