Report: Dump truck carrying driver that fell in MS River may have had faulty brakes

VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Vicksburg Post is reporting that the truck a 22-year-old truck driver was driving the day he backed into the Mississippi River had brakes that likely did not function properly.

They are also reporting that there were possibly issues with opening the driver’s side door from the inside. The Vicksburg Post obtained the report from the Vicksburg Police Department on Tuesday. 

One traffic investigator concluded his report, saying that in his opinion the vehicle should have been "deadlined or taken out of service".

The accident happened back in August at Florida Marine Transporters Company on Warrenton Road.

Collins, a subcontractor from the Vicksburg, was waiting for rocks to be loaded onto his truck, when the vehicle rolled into the river and he went underwater.

The truck was located later that night  in the river underneath the barge that contained the rock being unloaded onto the dump trucks. Collins' body was recovered 11 days later less than a mile from where he went into the water.
