COFO Central Offices get 23rd Freedom Trail marker

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

To avoid internal strife during the civil rights struggle of the 1960's, several organizations banded together to establish the Council of Federated Organizations or COFO.

A Mississippi Freedom Trail marker, the 23rd, was unveiled at COFO Central Offices on John R. Lynch Street in Jackson commemorating the important role it played in the fight for equal rights in Mississippi.

Robert Moses came up with COFO in 1962 when he was field secretary for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.

Moses said, "...and it became the hub for the work in Mississippi and for Freedom Summer, so a lot went on in this little, small building."

The organization's early focus was to support the Freedom Rides.

In 1964, it created the Mississippi Summer Project, better known as Freedom Summer.
