CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Canton nine-year-old remains hospitalized after being shot in his home at the Canton Garden Apartments early Wednesday morning.

Tenants and family were reluctant to talk on camera, but some in surrounding homes are horrified and concerned for their safety.

Shots fired into the apartment striking a nine year old could be heard throughout the Canton Garden Apartments and neighboring homes.

Family members tell us the child is Emarion Williams, who was shot in the chest, arm and pelvis.

The third grader attends Reuben B. Myers Canton School of Arts and Science.

We are told other children were in the room when gunfire erupted.

"I found out today when my Daddy was telling me about it," said Patricia Esco Stokes, who grew up in the neighborhood near the apartment complex.

Her father was awakened by the shots sometime before three a.m.

Wednesday afternoon, she and sister Cynthia Wilson returned to their childhood home to check on him.

"My Dad said 'Well I heard it and I didn't go out because I didn't know what they were doing'. And what if he would have and what if they were doing drive bys," said Esco Stokes.

Twenty five year old Larry Carter the Fourth was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and shooting into a dwelling.

Residents, who did not want to be interviewed fearing retaliation, said Carter has a criminal record.

Emarion remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Calls to the Madison County Sheriff's Department for a motive and information on the case have not been returned.
