MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Crooks are siphoning off their credit and debit card numbers from some Mississippians who fill up at the pumps.

It's called skimming  and it has occurred so far all across the metro.

The Attorney General's Cyber Crime Unit says that crooks are using a master key to get into the gas pump. From there they place the skimming device internally.

The small devices are impossible for drivers to see, according to experts.

Most recently, a skimmer was found at a Kangaroo station in Madison.

"My husband was here a couple of weeks ago. He had heard about it," said a driver. "As a matter of fact, he saw police over at that pump."

Some gas station owners are making sure fuel companies up their security to thwart the criminals.

Alarms are installed, special locks or security tape.. If broken, the pump may have been tampered with. You should report anything suspicious looking to the gas station manager immediately.

Here are some other tips:

  • Use pumps as close to the store entrance as possible. Criminals prefer the ones out of sight.
  • Some pumps don't  have a debit or credit option when you insert your card to pay, it's just credit. For other pumps, choose the option to pay as credit so thieves can't obtain your debit card PIN.  Attorney General Jim Hood warns consumers to pay with cash.

The Secret Services estimates that skimming is a multi billion dollar industry for identity thieves.
