If you were anywhere close to downtown Jackson during the noon hour Monday, you probably saw all the gridlock traffic. People came out in droves on this perfect weather day to enjoy the Mississippi State Fair.
It was bumper to bumper for much of the day at all entrances into the fairgrounds; many kids out of school and adults out of work for Columbus Day. What better way to spend it, than having fun on the fair midway.
"The crowd today, as we've had this year, so far this year, have been really good, said Mississippi Fair Commission Executive Director Chip Reno. "One thing a fair manager looks for more than anything else is great weather and we've had really great weather."
The mild temperatures are also a big draw for fair goers, who packed the rides and enjoyed the sights and sounds that only come around once a year.
"I wasn't expecting it to be as crowded as it is," said fair goer Tina Warnock. "They got their armbands today and school is out. I can't wait for the sun to go down and the adult crowd to come out."
If Mother Nature continues to cooperate, fair officials say this could be one of their best years attendance wise.
Fairgoers also saw plenty of blue lights around the fairgrounds as Jackson police provide perimeter security. Organizers say that extra layer of security is also working to draw more people for the events.
