COPIAH COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The man at the center of a standoff, and then a manhunt is now in custody in Copiah County.

Sheriff Harold Jones confirmed that Charles Knott turned himself in to authorities just before noon Tuesday. The night before, deputies trying to serve an arrest warrant, surrounded Knott's house on Dentville Road, after he was seen on the porch armed with a shotgun.

Officers stood guard well past midnight, but somehow Knott slipped out and into the woods.

"He went what we thought was back in his house; in effect he went down into the woods," said Sheriff Jones.

Officers returned to the same area Tuesday to resume their search.

Just before noon, Knott's stepfather delivered him to the sheriff's department headquarters in Gallman. Knott was on the run, wanted for home invasion and shooting into a vehicle.

"Think he went to see his girlfriend or something had some kind of argument," said Sheriff Jones. "I didn't look at the report yet. I did visit with that family and we've been keeping them safe in protective custody."

Sheriff Jones added he's dealt with Charles Knott in the past. He says Knott's been diagnosed as being bipolar, so he plans to get him some mental help while in custody.
