JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Tuesday got off to a violent start in the Capitol City as a store clerk was shot in the face during an attempted armed robbery at a West Jackson gas station.

Tuesday night, he remained hospitalized.

Security measures are being upped at this Super Quick on Bullard Street after this close call where surveillance cameras at a nearby gas station captured three men attempting to rob the gas station.

Just after midnight, the offenders walked in, demanded money then fired an assault rifle striking the clerk in the face.

"The victim was behind what appeared to be bullet proof glass," said JPD Commander Tyree Jones. "A shot was fired and the victim was struck in the face. They weren't able to get anything and they fled the scene without taking anything from the business."

Police believe the thick glass may have saved his life.

"It's a strong possibility that that clerk may not be with us today," Jones explained. "It's a strong possibility that glass may have saved his life."

Investigators do not know if this crime is linked to the use of an assault rifle used during an incident Friday on Albermarle Street.

"We are still in preliminary stages of course we can link assault rifles to both incidents," Jones said.

Anyone with information about this case should call Crimestoppers.
