JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A jury duty scam we first told you about this summer has resurfaced. This week a caller, pretending to be a Hinds County Deputy, contacted an elderly Jackson resident. His daughter then alerted Jackson Police.

"The phone call they had gotten just didn't seem right," said JPD Commander Tyree Jones.

The Jackson police officer was approached by a woman Tuesday. She said her 75-year-old father was called by someone who said they were a Hinds County Deputy.

He was told he missed jury duty October 3rd and was instructed to go to Kroger. Once there he was to get a Green Dot card for a certain amount of money to avoid being jailed.

"This wasn't protocol for someone that doesn't show up for jury duty," said Jones.

He called the number, got a voice mail and confirmed that person does not work for the sheriff's department.

"The number comes back to somewhere in Bailey Mississippi," added the commander. "According to the information that I received so far which is not even a Hinds County or surely not a Jackson municipality."

We then called the 601-908 number. The person answering the call said it was the police department. After asking how to pay for missing jury duty, the call was put on hold.

Then a man answered and said he was Lt. Wallace with the Hinds County Sheriff's Department. The man was asked which agency he was working with.

"Which agency are you with ma'am?" He answered. He said no one called me.

The sheriff's department, Hinds County ma'am," he said. "I'm pretty sure no one has told you you have to pay. This whole conversation, we have no time for prank calls. Goodbye".

Authorities said you are never called when a warrant has been issued, and you never have to pay. You will be served then arrested.

If you are called, residents are urged to write down the number and contact the local police or sheriff's department.

You can also call the Hinds County Circuit Clerks Office if you have questions about jury duty service.
