JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Nancy Eatmon of Brandon didn't know what it was at first.

"I heard this big boom then I looked up in the sky for some reason," said Eatmon. "I looked in the sky and I saw this bright flash."

Nancy was among several hundred people from Georgia to Mississippi to witness a meteor entering the atmosphere early Wednesday morning. Images of the meteor were snapped on cell phones just before 7 am by people who witnessed it here in the metro.

"White flash then a blue puff of smoke after that," added Eatmon. "Then I saw a bright white light do an upward spiral, then it disappeared."

NASA officials say it appears to have fragmented 41 miles above Louisville, where it was captured on a dash cam video.

It's estimated speed was 89,000 miles per hour.  Experts believe it was small, only 5 pounds, and 5 inches in diameter, leaving a trail across the sky that could be seen as far away as Kentucky.

"It was absolutely unbelievable," said Eatmon. "I called my husband to come out and look at it, look at the blue smoke. My husband came out here and looked at this. He was like 'Wow!'"

Over 170 reports of the event were made to the American Meteor Society.
