MERIDIAN, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Many times, individuals make a difference for a community. But Walt Grayson has a story for us about a community making a difference for individuals. We’re going to the Meridian Museum of Art where one of their big annual events recently wrapped up.

The building is a piece of art in it self. It started over a hundred years ago as a Presbyterian Church; then in 1911, became the Meridian Library.

In 1970 the library outgrew it and the building became the Museum of Art, giving the Meridian League’s art displays a permanent home. And with the home for the arts came the artists.

One of the most popular shows the museum sponsors is the Bi-State Art Competition. It is open for artists who at least at one time or another lived in Mississippi or Alabama.

Kate Cherry is the Executive Director for the Museum and understands that half of the process of producing a piece of art is, when it’s finished, for the artist to have a place where it can then be seen.

It provides a spot for the artist to have a place to go," said Cherry. "‘Cause it’s actually the only venue of this sort in the area other than a few galleries."

Terisa Pittman is the President of the Art Association and says the Museum of Art fills another gap in the community.

"We love our art museum because it fills in the gap academically of teaching the arts because Lauderdale County Schools, they do not have arts in the elementary and middle school," said Pittman. So the mission and vision of the art museum allows every student in this area to benefit from art lessons and art history and just really enjoy our little museum and the things we have."

By the way, the Best of Show winner this year was Clinton artist, Rick Anderson for his painting, Moon Shadow. Rick’s wife, Merrie, picked up the award because Rick was in Birmingham at another event at that time.

Build it and they will come, I think I heard somewhere. Paint it and they will come look at it. All of that happens at the Meridian Museum of art and that Makes A Difference in the community.
