Press Release from the Gulf South Conference
Delta State running back Chris Robinson and West Alabama defensive end Darius Ellis have been named the Gulf South Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for games played in Week Seven of the 2016 season. Mississippi College wide receiver/punt returner Marcel Newson was tabbed the Special Teams Player of the Week, and Valdosta State running back Cedric Hollingshed is the Freshman of the Week.
Robinson tied an 80-year old Delta State record for total touchdowns this week, scoring six times in a 55-51 win for the Statesmen over West Florida. His final touchdown was the game-winner, getting into the endzone with 1:35 left in the game to solidify the win for DSU. On the day, Robinson rushed for 132 yards and five touchdowns, and he had three receptions for 100 yards and one touchdown. Robinson’s six touchdowns also tie the GSC record for total touchdowns in a game. He is now one of three players in conference history to score six times. He now has 17 rushing touchdowns this year, which is tied for the most in all of Division II. Robinson has won GSC Offensive Player of the Week three times this season.
Ellis was pivotal in the 31-7 win for the Tigers on the road against No. 24 West Georgia. The West Alabama defense did not allow the UWG offense to score any points in the contest and surrendered just 206 total yards of offense. Ellis led the way for UWA, recording seven tackles, three and a half tackles for loss, and a pair of sacks. He now has a total of seven sacks this year, which puts him in the Top 15 in the country.
Newson played a huge role in the near upset win for the Choctaws over No. 17 Valdosta State. In addition to a stellar performance on the offensive side of the ball, where he had more than 100 yards receiving and a touchdown, Newson scored the go-ahead touchdown for MC on a 73-yard punt return in the fourth quarter.
Hollingshed is earning GSC Freshman of the Week honors for the second straight week and the third time overall this season. In Saturday’s win over Mississippi College, Hollingshed scored the winning touchdown for the Blazers on a six-yard rush with 3:58 showing on the clock. Overall, Hollingshed had 65 yards on 13 carries and 41 yards receiving on five catches.
