On Thursday at 8:35 a.m, the Madison Police Department was notified that a 15-year-old student at Madison Central High School had a handgun in his backpack.
Officers arrested the student and got the firearm from his backpack. The firearm was a .22 caliber Colt 1911 semi-automatic pistol.
Police say it was not loaded and there was no ammunition in his backpack.
The student was removed from the school. Police say the preliminary investigation showed that the student had not made any threats towards individuals or fellow students.
He has been charged with possession of a firearm by a minor on school property.
He was taken to the Yazoo County Detention Center and will appear in Madison County Youth Court.
