MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A 15-year-old will be facing juvenile court after bringing a gun to school Thursday. The school says the teenager was showing the gun off in the parking lot, and students immediately notified the principal and a resource deputy on campus.

The school is following the district's handbook to decide what disciplinary action to take.

"The young man will be - or is suspended until further notice, and then we'll move with what's appropriate in the handbook," said Madison County Schools Superintendent Ronnie McGehee.

The teen is being charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Minor on School Property.

"He did not have any ammunition and the gun was not loaded," said Captain Kevin Newman with the Madison Police Department. "He was brought in for questioning. Everything from the preliminary investigation indicates that he had not made any threats to any students or any persons at the school."

The student hadn't gotten into trouble at Madison Central before, and authorities do not believe this incident is reflective of a bigger problem at the school. Even still, the incident has parents feeling nervous.

"Well it could've been loaded, it could've gone off in his backpack. Somebody could have had a bad idea about something. I don't know, but it just could've been a whole lot worse," said Tracey Carter, who has a son at the high school.

"The bottom line is, this is also an unfortunate incident, and the first time we've had a firearm at Madison Central in my tenure," explained Superintendent McGehee.
