JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Thousands of boots, make that sneakers, hit the ground Saturday morning in the fight against breast cancer.

Survivors and supporters came together during the annual American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.

"It is very important, because we're trying to find a cure," said walk participant Joycelun Linvurgen.

There was a chill in the air, but fire in their hearts during the annual walk that began at Thalia Mara Hall.

A sea of pink flooded the streets of downtown Jackson with a purpose.

"It's very necessary you know, because everybody gets together and makes donations for fighting breast cancer," said walker Patrick Mitchell.

Survivors wear a pink and white sash of honor.

"I am here to celebrate eight years cancer free," said breast cancer survivor Katherine Bridges. "I am here to do this walk for my sisters that lost the fight".

More than 400 teams participated including sororities, fraternities, businesses, churches and corporations.

"I work for Armstrong Flooring", said plant manager Hunter Jones. "We wanted to get a big group from our plant to help support breast cancer awareness. We had a big drive to raise money over the last couple of months for this great cause".

According the American Cancer Society, breast cancer deaths are decreasing and that is thanks to early detection.

"Mine was found, thank God, at an early stage, at stage one," said breast cancer survivor Vaniessa Cousin. "But then twice since then it has gone to stage five, and it's all because of early detection."

Organizers said early estimates indicate the event raised  nearly $80,000. That money will go to programs for everything from recovery to transportation and self imaging.
