ROSS BARNETT RESERVOIR, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A popular barbecue competition drew more than 1,000 people to the Ross Barnett Reservoir this weekend.

“Mississippi is as much barbecue as much as Kansas City as much Memphis," said organizer Bobby Cleveland. "Our barbecue is as good as any.”

The smell of barbecue filled Old Trace Park as 16 teams from across the south competed for cash prizes and bragging rights at the annual SMOKIN’ on THE REZ sponsored by the Barnett Reservoir Foundation.

“Well, I love the Reservoir," said competitor Vivian Campbell. "It's so pretty out here and we have been doing this for as many years as they have had it. We have been barbecuing for 21 years.”

“We had three division: whole hog, pulled pork and ribs," said Cleveland. "And they are competing for $10,000 in total purse money.”

The barbecue cooks admit preparing finger licking foods, that the judges like, takes a lot of hard work and dedication.

“Depending on what you're cooking, you looking at anywhere 14 to 18 hours cooking time," said Buddy Wilson from Budro's BBQ. "It's worth it.”

After folks filled up on barbecue, they danced to live music performed throughout by a handful of Mississippi groups.

“It's all about Barnett Reservoir and the neighborhood and community," Cleveland added. "What is more Mississippi than a barbecue and a music festival?”
