CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Gangs in Canton are allegedly carrying out retaliation shootings in the city and police are working to prevent further bloodshed.

“This was just an innocent home and it has three bullet holes here,” said Canton Police Detective Terence Ware.

Residents on East Dinkins Street are on high alert after two homes and two cars were riddled with bullets last week.

“There were four people inside the home and luckily no one got hurt,” said Ware.

Police say the shootings stem from the death of 22-year-old Quintarius Allen.

Allen was shot multiple times while sitting in the back of a car outside a dance studio in Canton.

“Basically, the guys from one group is after another group because they feel this person was killed cause of their group," said Ware. "So they have been retaliating and shooting back and forth at each other.”

This shooting on East Dinkins is one of three drive by shooting that occurred over the past few weeks.

“They call themselves the Graveyard Boys and they shot up an individual’s car that was supposed to be part of the Backwoods Boys," Ware explained. "From that incident, the county had an incident.”

Police have boosted their patrols in the areas where shooting occurred to keep people safe, but they also need help from the community to catch the gunmen.

“They know what's going on, they know why it is going on, but they don't want to file charges on that person," Ware added. "They would rather take the law into their own hands and retaliate until someone is hot and hurt."
