JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Some elderly residents of a north Jackson apartment complex are living in fear. Many believe they are being targeted after repeated assaults and thefts.

"It was the most horrible crime that we've had in this neighborhood for 30 or 40 years," said James Longino.

The 88-year-old is talking about the attack he said happened a few weeks ago to his neighbor in the Diplomat apartments.

But across the street, tenants at the Carleton Apartments said there have been similar incidents.

"It was slightly after dark," said Longino. "This Afro American man came in at the mailbox, accosted her and hit her and knocked her on the concrete and she had to have surgery in her face."

Residents at the Carleton said they are concerned. They wouldn't talk on camera fearing eviction, but one person told us that there have been four muggings in the last three months.

"It may be the same person," added Longino.

JPD Commander Tyree Jones said only one incident report has been filed at the complex.

On October 6th a woman's purse was stolen as she walked to her car. She suffered minor injuries to her right hand and a cut on her arm.

We reached out to Carleton Apartments management with questions about the alleged attacks and safety measures for residents.

We were told those questions would be forwarded to the property's regional manager.
