Crews spray for flea infestation in Canton neighborhood

CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Public Health Risk has been declared for the Presidential Hills area in Canton.

Tuesday crews from the public works department spent much of the day spraying. Those who live there say Garfield, McKinley and Wilson Streets are the worst.

We were told you could not get out of your car or truck without being covered in fleas.

"We actually started from yesterday. We started mobilizing and getting all the insecticides together in order to do the spraying as well as putting down the granular material for the fleas," said Canton Public Works Director Terrance Sanders. "It's probably gonna take about 2 to 3 days in order for it to take full effect; the combination of the spraying and the laying of the granular pesticide on the ground.”

"I'm very concerned," said Derrick Sanders. "I've got nieces and nephews down the road. They are out here at the bus stop every morning. I'm very concerned."

Stray animals are believed to be the source of the infestation. The problem started about two weeks ago.

For those who live in the area, city leaders say you should seek medical treatment for flea bites, and you should wash linens and clothing.
