PIKE COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

House burglars are leaving their marks in Pike County. Three on Your Side found out what thieves are taking and what you can do to protect yourself from becoming a victim.

"We have had an increase in house burglaries," said Pike county Chief Investigator Gregory Martin. "Those burglaries have happened all over the county."

The county has had Forty-eight house burglaries within the last three months and already 16 during the month of October. Martin said his team turned to social media to help alert residents to be on the look out.

"All the information we actually posted on the Facebook page was to help the residents and make sure when they purchase new items or have old items to make sure they keep a record of the serial numbers," added Martin. "Also, take good photographs of the property because in some investigations we recover property and it's hard to identify the owner."

Chief Investigator Martin said they are receiving reports of burglars kicking down doors at night and also during the day while most homeowners are at work.

"Electronics has been a big thing," added Martin. "This month we have actually had burglaries at hunting camps. They go after items that are left at the camp."

Martin said it's critical you keep you doors locked and install security cameras at your home and at your hunting camp. His team has made several arrests, but Martin said he doesn't believe the burglaries are related.
