JPD stages training scenario

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A train collided with a school bus and when first responders arrived, they discovered a hostage situation.

That was the scenario in a training exercise staged by the Jackson Police Department in conjunction with several other emergency agencies on Wednesday. Media was briefed on Commerce Drive near Stonewall Street; then taken to the "hot zone" for footage.

"We find this to be very beneficial training, not only for us, but for the public as well, to show the public that we are prepared and that we do conduct training as it relates to other things outside the normal scope of just regular criminal activity within the city of Jackson," said Commander Tyree Jones.

Commander Jones said there is no threat of such an event here in Jackson, but that an actual incident involving a school bus and train, recently, prompted this training exercise.

Several agencies, including Jackson Public Schools representatives, participated to enhance cooperation between agencies.
