RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Disabled children from across the state had a chance to get back to nature Friday, thanks to the Foundation for Mississippi Wildlife, fisheries and parks.
The event was held at the Turcotte Shooting range.

Seventy kids from six to seventeen hit the fishing pond and pulled out some big ones; no disabilities here, just able bodied sportsmen!

Grayson Phillips, his young friend and Dad drove all the way to Turcotte from Alabama.  Grayson has been confined to a wheelchair his entire life.  He was born with Spina Bifida. But has an intense love of the outdoors.

"I love to hunt and this is another opportunity to meet people and share my love for hunting," said Grayson.

Vivian Collins of Madison is also wheelchair bound.  We caught up with her at the fishing pond.

"It gives them a chance to see what it's like for other people that do what they are not always going to be able to do," said Vivian.

Central Mississippi landowners have provided 29 private hunting clubs where the youngsters will be taken for a specially arranged deer hunt this weekend.

The Foundation for Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks was founded in 2003. It works with the MWF&P to protect and preserve wildlife heritage.

"You'll see kids on wheelchairs, on crutches, it doesn't matter what the disability is, they are welcome," said Foundation CEO Billy Redd. "For a lot of these kids, this is their one time a year to be able to participate in the outdoors. I think we get more out of it than what the kids do. It's so heart wrenching and wonderful to give these kids what a lot of us take for granted that we can do everyday."
