Jackson's Community Orchard launches second phase

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The lot next to Rosemont Baptist church in Jackson was vacant, overgrown and unsightly.

Now, it is being transformed into a community orchard...phase-two of Keep Jackson Beautiful's project.

There will an assortment of fruit trees, blueberry bushes, herbs and more...all available to those who would like to have some.

And executive director Alicia Crudup tells 3 On Your Side, it's a permaculture design.

Crudup said, "Okay, well a regular garden is where you have to constantly maintain; you have to wed it; you have to water it; you have to plant stuff, but with the permaculture, it feeds off nature. It mimics what nature already does."

The community orchard will be maintained by church, community members and volunteers.

Keep Jackson Beautiful partnered with Lowe's, UPS, Entergy, the Mississippi Urban Forestry Council, the Mississippi Forestry Commission and Rosemont Baptist to make this happen.
