Press Release from Mississippi State Athletics
Tuesday brought about another first for the Mississippi State women’s basketball team.
The Bulldogs received the highest preseason ranking in school history as the Associated Press Preseason Top 25 Poll placed MSU at No. 10.
The ranking comes two days before Vic Schaefer’s fifth MSU edition opens the 2016-17 slate with an exhibition game against Arkansas-Fort Smith on Thursday. Tip at Humphrey Coliseum is set for 6 p.m., and admission to the contest is free.
The final tune-up before the Nov. 11 regular-season opener will also be streamed online live on SEC Network +.
Tuesday’s ranking comes after State was tabbed No. 11 in the USA Today Preseason Coaches’ Poll, 12th in the ESPNW preseason poll and 10th by the United States Basketball Writers Association.
The Bulldogs, who were picked to finish second in the SEC by league media, return all five starters and nine letterwinners from last year’s team that won a school-record 28 games and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16. State also claimed its best SEC finish with a tie for second while notching the top mark for SEC wins for the second-straight year with 11.
MSU is one of six SEC teams in the preseason poll. South Carolina begins the season at No. 4, and Tennessee follows the Bulldogs at No. 13. Kentucky and Florida rank 19th and 20th, respectively, while Missouri comes in at No. 24.
Texas, Mississippi State’s foe for its Nov. 20 home opener, is No. 8.
