JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Salvation Army received a big gift Wednesday, in the form of 54,000 pounds of chicken and almost 290,000 eggs.

Governor Phil Bryant and the Mississippi Poultry Association made the donation, and it's now a tradition in its sixth year. The goal is to keep people fed over the holidays.

Essentially, the donation equals half a million servings of protein, according to Ryn Laster, Chairman of the Board of the Mississippi Poultry Association.

"We started this six years ago, to make a donation to the governor actually, and then he will disburse it through the Salvation Army to meet the needs of people during the holiday season," Laster says.
