CONSIDER THIS: Be safe in cold weather

Source: WLBT Source: WLBT

The weather is beginning to cool down and the chance of house fires is increasing. As the temperatures drop further many people will pull out space heaters and other heating appliances to keep the house warm.

There are some basic things you can do to reduce the chance of a fire and increase the chance that you and your family will survive if a fire starts in your home.

If you don’t have smoke detectors, install them. If you have them, check the batteries. Buy a fire extinguisher. Talk with your family about a fire escape plan and practice that plan.

Plug space heaters into a wall outlet; don’t use an extension cord. And turn off space heaters when you leave a room or go so sleep. If you smoke, don’t smoke inside.

Consider This:

Nearly every year there are house fires in our region where families are tragically affected forever. Let’s keep that from happening this year.

Being aware of the fire dangers in your home and taking advantage of simple, inexpensive ways to protect your family could help prevent a fire and ultimately be a life or death decision.

Don’t wait until the cold weather sets in, take action now, put your plan in place and be prepared.
