Leake, Attala authorities search for suspect after high speed chase

LEAKE COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Authorities searching for a suspect after a high speed chase in Leake and Attala Counties on Wednesday night.

At 9:30 p.m., Leake County Sheriff's Office called Attala dispatch to notify them of a white male that was traveling on Highway 35 in a stolen 2009 black Ford Mustang. As soon as Attala County deputies spotted the stolen car, the driver fled at a high rate of speed on Highway 35 South coming into Attala County.

Officials say the suspect crashed at Highway 35 and Pumping Station Road. 

He then headed into the woods where units with Leake and Attala Counties searched for him in that area. The suspect, Avery Cotton, has charges out of Attala County for felony fleeing, stolen vehicle, and possession of cocaine. 

His charges out of Leake County include felony indictment for possession of contraband inside of a correctional facility, felony fleeing from a law enforcement officer, speeding, reckless driving, driving on wrong side of road, and disregard for traffic safety device. 

He was last seen in the Singleton area.

Cotton should be considered armed and dangerous.
