Press Release from Southern Miss Athletics
Southern Miss junior Picasso Nelson, Jr., garnered the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honors for his contributions in the Golden Eagles’ 39-24 regular-season finale over Louisiana Tech last weekend.
The defensive back tallied a career-best nine tackles (six solos) to go along with a pair of interceptions in the Golden Eagles triumph that enabled them to become bowl-eligible. It marked his first two interceptions of the year as well as his first career two-interception game.
Both of the Mendenhall, Mississippi, native’s picks came in the fourth quarter as Southern Miss fought back a late charge from the Bulldogs. Nelson, Jr., also helped the Golden Eagles defense limit Louisiana Tech to just eight yards rushing and 246 yards passing – a team which was averaging 357.3 passing yards heading into the weekend. Nelson was the second Golden Eagle to register two interceptions in a game this season.
The award marked the first for Nelson, Jr., in his career and the first for the Golden Eagle defense since Daman McCullum won on Sept. 22, 2014. Southern Miss ended the 2016 regular season with a total of four weekly awards, which was voted on each week by panel of media members that cover the league.
