Metro Toys for Tots collections low as deadline nears

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Year after year the Toys For Tots programs has delivered the magic of Christmas to thousands of needy children in Metro Jackson.

This year is somewhat troubling with a deadline looming and collections coming in slowly.

"Toys for tots makes sure all children get a toy at least one toy. You know we started in 1947 (in) Los Angeles and from there it's all over the country now," said Billy Henderson.

The Toys for Tots warehouse in Pearl is a large building, with toys from dolls to basketballs and games. There are individual rows marked specifically by children's ages and in another room two bicycles.

"Collections are down and we are up on the number of kids that are registered this year.  Last year 2,900 kids were served. This year we are going to be somewhere between 3,500 and 4,000," Henderson said.

Area corporations have always been generous in the past, filling the need.

Collection boxes are set up at area Toys R Us locations.  You can even make monetary donations. Collection points include area Walmart stores.

Time is running out with a December 15th deadline nearing.

The number of children registered through the foundation keeps growing.

As of Friday there were 4,200 children hoping Santa wouldn't pass their house by this Christmas.
