Press Release from Blue Mountain College Athletics
Blue Mountain College knocked off its second NCAA DI school Thursday night, besting SWAC member Jackson State University 57-49.
The Toppers, just sitting outside the top 25 poll at no. 31 in the NAIA, took out Arkansas Pine-Bluff in late November, adding another notch to their DI belt.
Jay Howard led Blue Mountain with 12 points in the contest and Chris English pitched in 10.
Perhaps the best play came from the Toppers' bench, as Chase Brittingham, Harrison Fancher, Justin McClellon and Dominic Hudson provided valuable minutes and 10 of 11 Toppers scored in the game.
Blue Mountain was able to slow the Tigers' run attack early, taking a 23-30 lead into the half.
The Toppers outshot JSU from the floor 42.9 to 30.5 percent and held pre-season All-SWAC pick Paris Collins to 12 points.
Blue Mountain also outscored the Tigers 22-18 in the paint.
"I'm so proud of our guys. We had a great team effort, " BMC head coach J.D. Parker said. "Offensively, our scoring was spread out and we played through some adversity. We persevered, and overall, showed good composure and held on to the lead. Our execution wasn't great, but it was overcome with great effort. I think we can still get a lot better, and we have to because we've got 18 conference games coming up."
Blue Mountain returns to action Dec. 29 in conference play against Faulkner University in Montgomery, Ala. with a 7:30 p.m. tip.
