Bernard Blackwell All-Star Game: South rallied in the 4th quarter to beat the North 21-14

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

A game is never over until the final horn sounds.  That was the case Saturday at Milner Stadium in Gulfport, the site of the 68th annual Bernard Blackwell North-South All-Star game.

The North All-Stars grabbed a 14-nothing first half lead.  Madison Central quarterback Jack Walker tossed a 25-yard touchdown to Travis Tucker of Senatobia in the first quarter.

North running back Jaley Adams of Kossuth would slip through a couple of defenders before he was hauled down inside the five down to the South All-Stars one-yard line.   Walker would sneak the ball in from there to give the North what looked like a commanding 14-o halftime lead.

The South would display a robust fourth quarter effort.  St. Martin quarterback Wayne Overmann, an Air Force Commitment, fired a perfect 24-yard touchdown strike to Tyquan Ulmer of Laurel, South trailed 14-7 early in the fourth quarter.

Under nine minutes remaining, Hattiesburg quarterback Julian Conner connected with St. Martin receiver Kalem Reddix, a Colorado State commitment, for 36-yards down to the North 4 yard line.  Reddix extended his entire body to snag the pass.

It would take a little luck for the South to tie the game.  Running back Quitten Brown of Lawrence County took the hand off and spun around at the five, the ball was stripped and bounced into the end zone.  That's where a couple of players attempted to jump onto the loose football.  Wayne County's Chris Cooley was successful and he recovered for a game-tying touchdown, 14-14.

The South would rise again with 4:29 left in the fourth quarter.  Quarterback Wayne Overmann handed the ball off to Laurel's Tyquan Ulmer, he would loaf a game-winning 19-yard touchdown strike to a leaping Corbin Blanchard of St. Stanislaus. The South All-Stars prevailed on the day 21-14 in a super game that kept the fans on both sides on the edge of their sits. Blanchard has also committed to the Air Force Academy.

Blanchard said, "It wasn't just me, everybody played a part in that.  Tyquan threw a great ball in there.  I had to go get it."

For the fifth time in the last six Bernard Blackwell All-Star games, the South has prevailed.

Overmann was elated after the victory.  "We knew what we had to do.  We didn't want to look bad in front of our family, our community, and friends, "stated Overmann.  "You know my teammates, the group of guys.  We all had fun we got the job done.  We know we would battle to get done."

Reddix said "We were down and everybody like, we're about to get it, we're All-Stars.  That's want we do.  By halftime we kept pushing the ball, pushing the ball and we got it off the top."

The South All-Stars lead the all-time series with 33 wins, 27 losses and 4 ties.
