MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The City of Madison is not tolerating a string of car break-ins and they are installing security cameras as a way to fight back.

Strawberry Patch Park is a place people can take their kids, go on a run and appreciate nature, but some burglars had their own fun at the park back in October - and the City says they won't have it.

"It was just a one-time event, but there were three vehicles that were broken into, and we thought that if we'd have had the cameras at the time, we might've been able to get some leads and make some apprehensions in that event," explained Captain Kevin Newman with the Madison Police Department.

The Mayor and Board of Aldermen signed a $43,000 contract with Cable Tech Services of Pearl to install 15 to 20 cameras in the park.

But people who frequent the area say the burglaries never stopped them from visiting the park.

"I'm glad they're putting up the security cameras, but I have not felt unsafe here," said Gary Schemmel, who says he goes to the park every other day to walk the mile-long trail.

Police say security cameras are always a good idea, and they'd been considering them even before the break-ins.

"It's been kind of in the planning phases before that," added Captain Newman. "We're always being proactively security-conscious."

Newman hopes the cameras themselves will serve as a deterrent to criminals, and will help police catch suspects if someone does commit a crime again.

The City is also looking into installing cameras in other locations as well.

They are hoping to have them in Liberty Park by the end of the year.
