It's strictly foot and small vehicle traffic allowed across the closed Highway 465 bridge which links north and south Eagle Lake. Some residents are parking their cars on one side of the bridge, and commuting home on 4 wheelers and side by sides.
"Whenever we normally are going 30 miles to I-20 now it's 38 miles to I-20 yeah, plus the rough roads," said resident Ronnie Tyler. "it's very much inconvenient."
And to get to just the other side of the bridge is almost a twenty-mile trip which would normally take about a minute.
"When you're tending to others and you're concerned, especially health wise," said resident Shirley Nevels.
Nevels is having to ride around on the levee to check in on her elderly friends to the north.
"It's hard to get an ambulance up there quick enough," added Nevels. "like I say, our fire department will answer to a 911 call and we do have an EMT up there but it would be very inconvenient to get an ambulance up there fast enough."
MDOT officials say they are in the bidding process to fix structural problems with the bridge. They hope to have repairs completed by May 26.
