JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Members of the Jackson community came together Thursday night to learn more about the one percent sales tax and get an update on the recently passed House Bill 1226, known as the Capitol Complex Bill.

"I wanted to come out to see what the one percent sales tax entails," said Felicia McClinton.

Senator Sollie Norwood along with other state leaders distributed the facts for Jackson residents on the one percent sales tax initiative. The City of Jackson said it collected 41.1 million dollars through March 2017.

"Pavement, draining, bridges, and the works," said McClinton. "Different projects are completed and construction and design is on the way. It's a process and not something done overnight."

Thirty-one-point-one million dollars has been obligated, according to the City of Jackson, for the one percent sales tax program. Infrastructure improvements are making progress throughout the city.

House Bill 1226 was also a hot topic at the meeting. Leaders discussed what the Capitol Complex Bill recently signed by Governor Bryant means for Jackson.

"We will invest in our police, invest in our infrastructure, and invest in the beautification of our city," said Senator Norwood. "What that will do is allow more money to go to other portions of our city because now this capital complex district will  take care of its own and that will free up other monies to take care of other projects in the city."

Sen. Norwood said the purpose of the meeting was to highlight positive actions moving forward.

"Let's put out the facts and let's spread the facts," added Norwood. "Once we do that we will be a better city."

"I think we have made great improvements and I'm looking for better things to come," added McClinton.
